Trumpturds are really excited about this. Because Twitter was blocking and banning them for spreading disinformation. Under Elon (who describes himself as a "free speech absolutist") it will be anything goes?
What would happen if somebody created a website like Facebook, where anything goes? No moderators. No censorship. No rules. No regulations. No blocking. Totally 100% open conversation where anybody can say anything to anyone about anything.
Answered by *Quora User* We don't have to guess or hypothesize. This has been done. The site was called 8chan. No moderation, anything goes, 100% total free speech. If you think about it, it's kind of obvious what happens next. I mean, sit down and think about it. What do you think happened? Who is it who would be attracted to a site that was completely unrestricted, with no limitations on content? I'll give you a hint. Two words. First word: Child. Second word: Porn. 8chan was overrun with child porn. I don’t mean naughty pictures of 17-year-olds. I mean 6-year-olds being gang-raped. The site lost its hosting, went offline for a while, then eventually found new hosting and came back. Can you guess what happened next? This should be be predictable. Who else besides child porn fans would be attracted to a completely free site with no content restrictions? That's right: Nazis. And incels. Oh, and mass murderers. So the second time 8chan lost its hosting and got kicked off the internet, it wasn’t for child porn. It was because it became the go-to place for Nazis, white supremacists, and incels to plan and coordinate mass killings. This didn't happen once. It didn't happen twice. It happened over and over. In 2019, it was booted by Cloudflare after it happened three times in six months. Yes, three different mass murderers, including the far-right white supremacist responsible for the El Paso murders, announced, planned, and published manifestos about mass murder on 8chan. Seriously, did you expect anything different? Is it that hard to predict? 8chan renamed itself 8kun and went back online with a Russian hosting provider. Can you guess what happened next? I feel like it shouldn't be hard to figure out. Think it through. Besides child porn fans and mass murderers, who else might be drawn to a completely unregulated site that allows any content whatsoever? Again I feel this ought to be obvious. Who else besides kiddie pornographers and mass murderers benefits from a 100% unmoderated site with absolutely no content moderation? Domestic terrorists, of course. In 2020, 8chan, now renamed 8kun, lost hosting when white supremacists overran it. It came back online, then in 2021, lost its new its Russian hosts after it was used to plan and coordinate the Capitol attack. It went back online with a Russian oligarch funded provider operating under a Scottish shell company, then again in 2021 lost its hosting one more time when users posted maps of Federal government buildings with detailed plans on how to plant bombs in them with the goal of starting a civil war. It came back again for a while with a Web host in St. Petersburg, Russia. So you see, there's no reason to speculate. We know exactly what happens. I don't feel that any of this should surprise anyone. 73.9K views. 6,555 upvotes. 33 shares. |
Hmmm. According to "Joe Conservative" (a Minus FJ sockpuppet) moderation is unnecessary.
Twitter without any moderation? Yeah, I think that definitely wouldn't work. Despite Minus delusions to the contrary. Still (with minimal moderation) it will likely be a platform for spreading disinformation and lies. Possibly driving away most sensible users. Because allowing lies and disinformation will increase public trust in Twitter (one of Musk's stated goals)? I doubt it.
The deal hasn't gone through yet. Government regulators need to approve. My preference would be that Elon Musk does not end up owning Twitter. Because the day the sale is completed won't (IMO) be a "great day" for free speech. I don't know that it will be a bad day. However, the fact that trumpturds think otherwise says to me it certainly could be bad for free speech if America's biggliest oligarch takes Twitter private.
Regarding the cartoon near the top of this post... one definition for "Space Cadet" is "a person perceived as out of touch with reality, as though high on drugs". Does this describe Elon Musk? As wealthy as he is, I don't know how he could be in touch with reality. His per share offer for Twitter of $54.20 is a marijuana reference. Ha ha. How many millions did making that joke cost?<
